Securing Cloud and 5G in a Data-Driven Economy

Surachai Chatchalermpun on Why There Is a Need for Cloud Leadership
Surachai Chatchalermpun, country cybersecurity and privacy officer, Huawei Technologies (Thailand)

In the data-driven economy, cloud is a key enabler for enterprises to transition into resilient and agile data-driven businesses. As enterprises in Thailand embark on their cloud journey, factors such as data security, governance and sovereignty are becoming central to cloud conversations, considering the country’s recently enforced data protection law.

Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act - PDPA - which came into effect on June 1, 2022, comprehensively covers and regulates the data collection, usage, provision, storage, processing and consent protocols. In comparison to EU's GDPR, the penalty for non-compliance is considered to be stricter under PDPA in some cases. Besides civil penalties, non-compliance can also attract severe criminal penalties, including imprisonment.

Surachai Chatchalermpun, country cybersecurity and privacy officer, Huawei Technologies (Thailand), emphasizes on cloud security as a critical area within cybersecurity for CIOs and CISOs to focus on.

"The more data a company keeps, the bigger the liability and accountability burden. Therefore, CIOs and CISOs should balance the two - data and the risks," Chatchalermpun says. "They should also ensure security requirements under GDPR and Thailand PDPA are included in the cloud contracts and are enforceable and auditable for the cloud service provider."

In this interview with Information Security Media Group, Chatchalermpun discusses:

  • Cloud security taking into consideration Thailand PDPA;
  • Cybersecurity priorities for CIOs and CISOs in a data-driven economy;
  • Initiatives around enhancing 5G security.

Chatchalermpun has more than 15 years of experience in cybersecurity in leading companies in the energy and financial services sector. Before joining Huawei Technologies (Thailand), he headed IT security for Krung Thai Bank and Maybank Kim Eng. He is also the VP for (ISC)² Bangkok chapter.
