Profiles in Leadership: Subhajit Deb

How a Non-Techie Became the Head of Cybersecurity Operations for Global Giants
Subhajit Deb, CISO, Envoy Global

Subhajit Deb was a 22-year-old college graduate in 1999 with a major in hospitality management. He had no idea he would have to deal with technology for work - let alone secure it. Twenty three years later, Deb has two decades of experience under his belt in creating, leading and managing global information security, business continuity, risk management and data privacy programs.

Deb took a job at a logistics company out of college but was forced to look for work when the firm closed its India operations. He soon applied for a customer service executive role at Dell but was inadvertently sent to an interview for a tech support role.

"There are accidents in your life that change the course of your destiny. I cannot think of doing anything else in my life than what I do today," Deb says.

He got the job at Dell and launched a career in technology management. Today, he serves as the CISO for Envoy Global, a leading immigration services provider that helps companies hire and manage an international workforce.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group conducted as part of the CyberEdBoard's ongoing Profiles in Leadership series, Deb discusses:

  • The benefits of having an integrated compliance model for risk management;
  • His approach to being frugal and managing cyber risk well;
  • Closing the gap between academia and the application of innovation in cybersecurity.

Deb, who leads cybersecurity at Envoy Global, has managed information security and data privacy for companies in the financial, insurance and pharmaceutical industries. He holds two U.S. cybersecurity patents and has two others in progress, along with several trade secrets registered toward various areas of information security and risk management. Deb advises early-stage cybersecurity startups and is on the advisory boards of EC Council, CrowdStrike Tech Forum and ISMG's CyberEdBoard.
