Nuno Teodoro, cybersecurity and privacy officer, Huawei Portugal

Keeping your organization's stakeholders and customers apprised of the latest regulatory requirements as well as working with regulators and other authorities requires a mix of technical acumen and soft skills, says Nuno Teodoro, cybersecurity and privacy officer of Huawei Portugal.

"One might think that this is purely either a technical or a more, let's say, process - or political - role, and it's neither. It's a mix of both," he says. Above all, he adds, any CISO or chief privacy officer today must not only translate for stakeholders - be they the board of directors, customers, internal security, legal or privacy teams - how best to comply with relevant regulations facing their organization, but also - of course - understand how to comply with them technically.

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group as part of the CyberEdBoard’s ongoing Profiles in Leadership series, Teodoro discusses:

  • Essential, core CISO skills, including best practices for clearly communicating cybersecurity, technical and regulatory requirements;
  • How regulations continue to evolve, and the positive effects this has on individuals' awareness of security and privacy, albeit tempered by the rise in cyber-focused fear, uncertainty and doubt as a propaganda tactic;
  • His personal interest in researching cybercrime, cyber terrorism and cyber warfare.

Teodoro is the cybersecurity and privacy officer for Huawei Portugal. He previously served as the global CISO for Truphone and worked as an information security expert and information security officer in other multinational organizations, including Vodafone and Allianz. He is a board member of ISACA Portugal and a member of the GSMA Fraud and Security Group, the Executive Cyber Exchange and ClubCISO.
