Senior Director, Operational Risk Management - Sallie Mae - Newark, DE

The Senior Director – Operational Risk Management is a key member of the Enterprise Risk Management organization reporting to the VP Enterprise & Operational Risk Management (VP E&ORM) of Sallie Mae. In particular, the Senior Director will be responsible for the risks associated with Client, Products & Business Practices including operational, reputational and regulatory risks and ensuring compliance with Sallie Mae’s Enterprise Risk Framework and Risk Appetite Statements. The Senior Director will interact broadly with process owners and the other control functions. Additionally, the Senior Director will participate extensively in internal audits and regulatory exams pertaining to his / her subject matter. The Senior Director will administratively lead a small team (2-3 FTE). Support 1LoD in their risk management activities Providing the necessary effective challenge and oversight to all business activities related to client, products & business practices Execute, support or coordinate the risk assessments of new products, processes, vendors etcetera Monitoring and evolving the Risk Profile Report to ensure the metrics and attendant thresholds/limits are reflective of the external / internal environment and the Bank’s risk appetite Support the development of appropriate Policy and Standards to be executed upon by business and/or process owners, implementation of said policies and ensure ongoing compliance with these policies Support the development of the Internal Control Framework (MARC, non SoX internal controls, Heat Map), and ensure implementation and ongoing compliance Issue/Operational Event oversight and analysis Escalate risk issues to the VP E&ORM and/or the Chief Risk Officer for further consideration and escalation by the Governance Sub-committees Support and engage in all internal audits and regulatory exams specific to areas of responsibility and interface broadly with other control areas Owns the E&ORM GRC modules and Village structure Train and develop employees to ensure the E&ORM function is fit for purpose with depth of talent.



Required Qualifications:10 - 15 years of progressive experience in legal, audit, operations, risk management or related fields Bachelor’s degree and relevant certifications that show an ongoing willingness and ability to expand knowledge and expertise 3+ years of supervisory experience of a team or a leadership role Deep understanding of (operational) risk management methodology and approaches Ability to understand complex business processes and develop or advice on effective risk management and monitoring programs Strong process orientation to enable a critical assessment of process and procedure to identify potential risks and remediation Superior knowledge of the external regulatory environment and the particular requirements for operating as a regulated banking entity Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships with internal and external business contacts Proven ability to challenge and influence business and risk partners Superior oral and written communications skills with the ability to present complex data in a clear, concise, user-friendly format to all levels of audience Proficient in Microsoft applications
