Enterprise Risk Management
Strong enterprise risk management is fundamental to Willis Towers Watson’s success. The Chief Risk Officer leads the ERM organization and oversees risk and quality management throughout WTW, including ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements regarding ERM frameworks. The Chief Risk Officer serves as a strategic advisor to Willis Towers Watson’s executive leadership team and maintains overall responsibility for developing and coordinating a comprehensive process for identifying, assessing, reducing, monitoring, controlling and reporting on key risks that might threaten the company’s success. Other senior leaders typically have the direct responsibility for managing individual risks; for example, the CEO has responsibility for strategy selection; the CFO has overall responsibility for accounting and reporting risks; Segment and Geography business leaders have responsibility for executing the company’s strategy for their business area and managing the quality of work/ E&O exposure; and the General Counsel has primary responsibility for legal and regulatory risk. This position will manage a team of approximately 12-15 and work closely with others involved in managing Willis Towers Watson’s risks and reports directly to the General Counsel. The selected candidate must be comfortable functioning in a matrixed environment as s/he will need to develop and maintain strong relationships across the organization.
The Chief Risk Officer leads the ERM organization to:
Provide a risk management framework and process (appetite, limits, assessments) Manage quarterly risk reporting at the enterprise level (including review and challenge) Conduct independent risk assessment for new products/services, M&A opportunities and significant initiatives/projects Oversee the WTW Insurance program Provide oversight for quality management (PE and WEM) – including first line roles focused on ensuring quality work Lead the ERM Steering Committee, consisting of key second line roles (e.g., ERM, compliance, information security, data privacy, legal, finance) and business/geography representatives, which works collaboratively and oversees the ERM framework and risk management at the enterprise level Have a direct line of communication to the Audit and Risk Committee regarding risk management Oversee key risk initiatives (e.g., progress against key control improvement plans) Ensure appropriate communication and training to build awareness and accountability for managing risk throughout the organization Lead a team of 12-15 colleagues (solid line) and another 3-5 (dotted line)
The Requirements 15 to 20+ years’ work experience, including experience working with executive leadership on risk management strategies. Experience leading a risk function in financial services or related field a significant plus. Direct, relevant experience in assisting senior executive teams implement change; global/multinational experience a significant plus Excellent strategic influencing skills with the ability to relate to a wide variety of people with different agendas while building consensus and driving results Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills; proficient at writing and speaking clearly and concisely on complex topics for diverse audiences Executive presence and gravitas Strong business acumen; ability to learn quickly about the company’s strategic business objectives and translate into priorities for the ERM function CERA or other relevant risk management designation a significant plus Undergraduate degree, with preference for advanced degree in Risk Management, Actuarial Science, Finance or related field The Company Willis Towers Watson is a leading global advisory, broking and solutions company that helps clients around the world turn risk into a path for growth.
