How AI Is Reshaping the Startup Landscape in Cybersecurity
Venture Capitalist: Tackling AI's Unsolved Problems Creates Startup OpportunitiesEnterprise-level ChatGPT has been a game changer. The interface and LLMs created a decade's worth of AI awareness in a year, even though one-third of cybersecurity companies were already using AI. The difference today is scale, as cloud allows massive datasets of all kinds, increasing from 700 variables to millions of data points.

Innovators are looking to use AI to do something incumbents can't do, said Alex Doll, founder and managing general partner, Ten Eleven Ventures. Incumbents typically struggle with new attack surface areas, but AI is a new attack surface like mobile and cloud. Startups move at a faster pace and are not burdened by technical debt. Plus, there aren't really entrenched established players, making it a fertile area in which to invest.
"Outside the security industry, most people don’t understand how data flows, and AI is going to hypercharge that problem in a way that is not easy to solve," Doll said. "It creates opportunity areas for companies that are focused on trust, privacy and AI.”
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2024, Doll also discussed:
- How the AI focus has shifted from the algorithm to issues related to the data pipeline, use of cloud and unique AI data identification;
- Why AI hallucinations are a symptom of a bigger problem: data provenance;
- How AI is just mass automation in which organizations build an abstraction layer and automate.
Doll founded Ten Eleven and has years of experience in working on both venture and growth opportunities in the cybersecurity sector. In 2002, he co-founded PGP Corp. and was an executive team member as it pioneered the encryption and data protection marketplaces. After PGP, Doll continued his involvement with security companies as an angel investor, independent director and security deal team consultant to private equity firm KKR.
