Why Gaining Visibility Into Cyberthreats Is a Big Challenge

ZeroFox CEO Foster on How Threat Intel and Attack Surface Management Are Colliding
James Foster, founder and CEO, ZeroFox

One of the biggest challenges organizations face is the lack of knowledge about what digital assets they have, making it difficult to protect them, respond to attacks, and collect evidence.

ZeroFox founder and CEO James Foster said external threat intelligence and attack surface management are colliding as organizations look to respond more effectively to threats beyond their perimeter. While threat intelligence has traditionally focused on technical indicators of attack, Foster said customers now want more information about the groups behind the attacks and their common tactics or techniques (see: James Foster on Taking ZeroFox Public in Hard Economic Times).

"Companies have a big challenge on visibility," Foster said. "If you don't know what you have, you can't protect it, you can't respond to it and you can't block attacks. And you have very little evidence or information if an attack does happen."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Foster also discusses:

  • Why companies struggle with gaining visibility into the external attack surface;
  • How threat intel and attack surface management complement each other;
  • How ZeroFox intends to take LookingGlass' technology into the enterprise.

Foster sets and executes on ZeroFox's mission to protect people and organizations from security, brand and physical risks on social media and digital platforms. In 2022, he successfully took ZeroFox public and acquired IDX. Prior to founding ZeroFox in 2013, Foster founded Ciphent, acquired by Accuvant in 2010. He also served as an adviser for the U.S. Department of Defense.
