The Evolution of the CISO's Role

Nissan Americas' Arvin Bansal on CISOs Looking After Both Business and Technology
Arvin Bansal, CISO, Nissan Americas

The role of a CISO in an organization is continuously evolving - and not in isolation. No longer just the cybersecurity tech lead, the CISO is now expected to take a whole-company approach to dissect and address cybersecurity issues that affect the firm's revenue and growth, said Arvin Bansal, CISO of Nissan Americas.

"COVID-19 taught us that technology and digital transformations have become key drivers for businesses to generate revenue, and those key drivers need protection," he said. "You don't want to impact your brand. You want customers to trust you. And to do all of that, it's no longer enough to just understand technology. The primary requirement for a CISO today is to know how the business operates."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Bansal also discusses:

  • Where a CISO fits in the hierarchy of an organization;
  • How to talk to key stakeholders;
  • The three strategic pillars of robust cybersecurity.

Bansal has successfully implemented global cybersecurity programs for Fortune 30 firms, including Citigroup, Experian and Verizon. He is also a member of advisory boards and nonprofits developing next-generation cybersecurity leaders.
