Cybersecurity Deserves the Proverbial Seat at the Table

Lanowitz of AT&T Cybersecurity on Security Trends, Collaboration and Investment

It's the year 2024, and cybersecurity deserves that proverbial seat at the table, said Theresa Lanowitz, head of evangelism and research at AT&T Cybersecurity. Enterprises need balanced investing and effective communications and collaboration with both internal teams and third-party advisers, she said.

The big headline this year, Lanowitz said, is that companies must be "prepared for the attacks that are coming their way. In 2023, distributed denial-of-service attacks emerged as the most prominent threat, indicating the ongoing challenges these attacks pose despite advancements in security defenses.

"We have the proliferation of IoT devices everywhere. You could have a moisture sensor sitting on a tractor in a cornfield in Iowa somewhere. You could have a sensor on a camera on a production line in Detroit. Are they secure? Do you know that they are on your network? Are they serving a purpose on your network? That's why the DDoS attacks were so prolific in 2023," she said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at the Fraud, Security and Risk Management Summit, Lanowitz discussed:

  • The main findings from the AT&T Cybersecurity Insights Report;
  • The prevalence of DDoS attacks and the importance of preparedness;
  • How to mitigate sector-specific cyberthreats, such as business email compromise and phishing, in the financial services industry.

Lanowitz is a thought leader in trends and emerging technology. Prior to joining AT&T, she worked as an industry analyst with Voke and Gartner. At Gartner, Lanowitz spearheaded the application quality ecosystem, championed application security technology and created a successful application development conference.
